APD to swear-in 25 new officers on Friday

AUSTIN (KXAN) – 25 new officers will join the ranks of Austin Police Friday. The 149th graduating class of cadets will be commissioned during a ceremony at 1 p.m. at Bannockburn Church, APD said. Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson will administer the Oath of Office to the cadets. According to the department, cadet training included legal issues, driving, crisis intervention training, community policing, leadership, defensive tactics, and physical fitness.The cadets also took part in the Chief's Run on Dec. 27.Council member to host emergency training course

AUSTIN (KXAN) – An Austin City Council member said Wednesday she will teach a three-day course on how to help in emergency situations. Mackenzie Kelly's office said she will be the lead instructor for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course. It will be at the Jollyville Fire Department at 9218 Anderson Mill Rd from Jan. 12 to Jan. 14. According to the announcement, there will be three sessions: Jan. 12th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Jan. 13th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Jan. 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Attendees will learn disaster preparedness, fire suppression, disaster medical aid, and light search and rescue techniques, Kelly's office said."Individuals do not need any prior experience in emergency services to enroll. HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – An Austin-area shelter said Thursday it is expanding its program to keep pets out of the shelter system. Austin Pets Alive! said Hays County opened a virtual pet resource center with APA!.The virtual pet center will expand Austin Pets Alive! Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.) program, APA! said. That program helps people keep their pets out of shelters by giving them access to specific services. "Extending the P.A.S.S. program to Hays County provides a virtual resource center to community members," said Lee Ann Shenefiel, Austin Pets Alive! Executive Advisor and Project Coordinator in a statement to KXAN. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A California man was arraigned Thursday on an indictment that alleges he shipped 50 grams of methamphetamine to Warren, Ulster, and Albany counties. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), the indictment alleges Laudicina shipped at least 50 grams of methamphetamine to three New York locations, once each in July 2022, August 2022, and November 2022.
