Nick Cave & the Bad SeedsGhosteen (Ghosteen/Bad Seeds)Isaac Watters Digs Ghosteen: Los Angeles’ own Isaac Watters told us about his love for a Nice Cave & the Bad Seeds classic.Isaac Watters: I have listened to this record on repeat many times over the last few years since it came out in 2019. It really carries me along in a way that only a few records ever have. Written after Nick Cave lost his young son, it deals with great depths of sorrow and tragedy, but everywhere throughout there is beautiful and hopeful imagery. There’s a Paul Simon lyric “I lived a life of pleasant sorrows /Until the real deal came /Broke me like a twig in a winter gale/ Called me by my name” that I think offers a nice explanation for why Ghosteen is so good.(Ghosteen/Bad Seeds)I read in an interview that Nick Cave broke from linear storytelling for this record, just “wandering out into the vast open landscape” and you feel that horizon stretching when listening t...A new San Ramon restaurant wants to elevate your pizza and beer pairings

But the debut of a San Ramon restaurant dedicated to figuring out which beer goes best with which pie just may be.The Tri-Valley’s Pairfield Pizza and Pints aims to elevate the pizza-and-beer experience with curated combos, straight from the mind of owner Jeff Farlow, the former culinary director at Wente Vineyards. Farlow spent years pairing wine and small plates for the Livermore winery, but, he says, “my heart was in beer.”The new eatery at the city’s Diablo Plaza shopping center opened Aug. 26 with a lineup of craft beer that hails from within 90 minutes drive of San Ramon. “A lot of people don’t realize how many amazing craft breweries are here,” he says, so many, in fact, the hard part was narrowing the options down to 24 taps. The menu provides recommended beer pairing for each dish, brown ale with the crispy chicken wings and their gingered sweet chili sauce, ...Delta passenger’s dog who went missing in route to San Francisco found safe after 3 weeks

DEAR JOAN: I have a small dog named Cookie. I think he’s part Maltese. He’s about 3 years old.Cookie eats a very healthy diet of premium dog food, but I like to give him special treats to show I love him. He loves cheese of all types and will gobble them down and ask for more. Is it OK to give him cheese? I don’t give it to him every day, but he sure loves it.— Jane D., AntiochDEAR JANE: Cheese is fine for most dogs, but some cheeses are better than others. Some dogs can be lactose intolerant. It sounds like Cookie does fine with cheese, but anyone giving their dog cheese for the first time should start with a small piece and see how the dog does. An upset stomach, diarrhea, pain and excessive gas are indications of lactose intolerance. The best cheeses for Cookie and other dogs are low in fat, sodium and calories. Cottage cheese, Swiss, mozzarella and Parmesan are good ones. Second best is Gouda, ricotta and American. Stay away from feta, provolone, goat, brie, blue, cream chee...Travel Troubleshooter: I was billed twice for my Booking.com room. How do I fix this?

I’ve talked with someone at the hotel numerous times as well, and they even contacted Booking.com on my behalf. Other California departments are scrambling to keep up

By Anabel Sosa | CalMattersJust five months ago, Alameda Police Chief Nishant Joshi faced a dire staffing crisis. Almost one third of the 88 sworn positions in his department were vacant, giving him 24 jobs to fill as quickly as possible. He wasn’t alone in that predicament. Many California police departments have reported serious hiring challenges in a persistently tight labor market over the past several years. But Joshi’s city council in April gave him something exceptional to lure candidates to Alameda: a $75,000 enlistment bonus in addition to regular pay that starts at $110,000 a year. It’s working. After receiving 170 applications from all over the country, the Alameda Police Department now has enough officers enrolled in academies to bring its projected total vacancies down to 10 by early next year. Joshi credits the bonuses, in part, for attracting applicants to a city with an expensive cost of living.“There are million dollar homes here. The average rent here is also $3,000,” ...Big changes to BART service schedule start today
