(CNN) — Federal agencies are making final preparations with the government on the brink of a shutdown and congressional lawmakers racing against Saturday’s critical midnight deadline. But the likelihood of averting a shutdown appears slim after GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Friday again failed to find agreement within his own party to extend government funding, leaving Congress at an impasse.Infighting among House Republicans has played a central role in bringing Congress to a standoff over spending – and it is not yet clear how the issue will be resolved, raising concerns on Capitol Hill that a shutdown, if triggered, may not be easy to end.McCarthy also faces threats to be ousted from his job if he works with Democrats as he faces a consistent resistance from the hardline conservatives in his own party.A shutdown is expected to have consequential impacts across the country, from air travel to clean drinking water, and many government operations would grind to a halt – t...Ollie Watkins scores a hat trick in Aston Villa’s 6-1 rout of Brighton

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — In a year where golf seems to revolve around money, the Ryder Cup is not immune. The PGA Tour had 11 tournaments with at least $20 million in prize money — excluding the majors — as it tried to hold off the threat of Saudi-funded LIV Golf. And then it struck an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund to be business partners.Pro golf is only going to get richer, however that Saudi agreement gets worked out, if it does.“I’m tired of it. The whole world is,” Seth Waugh, the CEO of the PGA of America, said in an interview leading into the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone. “We play for love and they play for money. It’s the one time of the year they should be playing for love, and we’re still talking about money. I get it.”Waugh said he had not had any conversations with players about it this year, though he has in the past on the topic of getting a bigger share of the revenue.“Nothing obnoxious or awful,” Waugh said. “That mak...Sports on TV for Sunday, October 1

Australia seeks some redemption

Respect for Australia has sunk so low that people ask the coach of winless Portugal, “Think you can beat them?”Patrice Lagisquet wishes. He smiles at the cheek of the question. He knows that even though the Wallabies are down and almost out of the Rugby World Cup, they still pose a formidable challenge for his team on Sunday in Saint-Etienne.“It’s fantastic to hear everyone say, ‘Do you think you can win?’” Lagisquet says. “But don’t forget we are the 16th nation in the ranking and will play a team used to playing at a higher level with very good players and a very good coach.“If we are very lucky, maybe we will have a little chance. But don’t forget they won by 20 points against Georgia, who we just drew with. Russian and Belarusian para-athletes will be able to participate at next year’s Paris 2024 Games “in an individual and neutral capacity” after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) voted against a full suspension of the two countries’ national Paralympic committees. The decision was slammed by Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak. “Permitting participation of Russians in the Paralympic Games … prolongs the war,” Podolyak said in a post on social media. The IPC on Friday “partially suspended” the two countries’ national committees due to “breaches of constitutional membership obligations.”Under the decision, athletes will have to perform under a neutral flag and without a national team or emblems, and the national committees won’t be allowed to organize any sport events, the IPC said. The sanctions come two weeks before the International Olympic Committee convenes in Mumbai to discuss the participant of Russia ...Latest news
