Callahan: Beating the Jets buys the Patriots time, but little else

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 11:49:11 GMT

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Only by the grace of Zach Wilson, the NFL’s most putrid passer and generous opponent, are the Patriots 1-2.The Pats won Sunday because they knew two things about Wilson: an early lead and killing clock is all you need. The kid will handle the rest. This is what a thoroughly defanged Pats-Jets rivalry has devolved to: both teams working around their quarterbacks, asking them to screw up less than the other guy.Mac Jones completed barely half his passes Sunday and failed to close the Jets out on three separate drives inside the last three minutes. But at least he didn’t take a safety, like Wilson did. Or throw for zero yards on fourth-and-10, like Wilson did. Or lead a 1-for-8 showing on third down, like Wilson did.To review…Trailing 13-10, Wilson cushioned the Pats’ lead by taking an unforgivable sack inside the end zone with 2:19 to play. Jones went three-and-out on the next series, giving Wilson a second chance just inside the 2-...

Top Dems declare deal on tax relief

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 11:49:11 GMT

Top House and Senate Democrats have reached an agreement on a tax relief bill, and plan to send it to Gov. Maura Healey this week as an opening act for their fall session. The accord, announced without details in a two-sentence statement last last week, could bring to end a debate that began nearly two years ago in an effort to put a dent in the state’s high cost of living and make Massachusetts more competitive for residents and businesses. In July, legislators broke for a summer recess without a deal on tax relief, instead allotting $581 million to cover tax relief impacts in fiscal year 2024. The final package’s value could exceed $1 billion in the out years, or come in lower depending on which relief measures are swept into the consensus bill.Competing House and Senate tax relief bills died in 2022 when the Legislature was blindsided as surging revenue collections required the state to give back about $3 billion in tax collections under a decades-old voter law. Gophers pick up pieces after allowing biggest comeback in P.J. Fleck era

P.J. Fleck lightly crumpled up a stat sheet and gently tossed it in a gray trash can inside Ryan Field after the Gophers’ colossal cave-in at Northwestern on Saturday.A spike into the bin might have been more fitting after the 37-34 overtime loss. That same box score flattened out didn’t reveal the true depths of the defeat. Fleck had built a 40-2 record when leading after three quarters, but on Saturday his team allowed a third loss in what became the largest fourth-quarter comeback of his U career. And it came against a Wildcats team projected to finish last in the Big Ten West. The Gophers had given up a 17-point lead to Maryland in the awkward pandemic year of 2020, and Fleck’s flawed first team in 2017 gave up a one-point lead on the road at Purdue. That was the precedent. This enters a new subcategory.Minnesota needed this September victory before it hits the truly daunting part of its schedule — Northwestern was supposed to be a win, especially amid a recent downturn seemingly e...
