After traveling to Oz, Dorothy famously clicked her heels together to declare, “There’s no place like home.”A Broadway producer is now saying the same thing as she brings the iconic stage musical “The Wiz” home to the National Theatre in the nation’s capital this Thursday through Sunday.“We are so excited,” co-producer Marjuan Canady told WTOP. “I’m a native Washingtonian. I attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts many years ago. One of the performers in ‘The Wiz’ was my former classmate in the musical theater program, Allyson Kaye Daniel, so this show has really been a reunion for us. We just love seeing each other in rehearsal and all of the shows so far, so it’s been a lot of fun just to reconnect with her.”Tuesday’s opening night falls on the exact 45th anniversary of “The Wiz” opening in movie theaters on Oct. 24, 1978. The stage version premiered in Baltimore on Oct. 21, 19...Gaza hospitals overwhelmed, doctor trying to get supplies to those in desperate need

Road teams are unbeaten in this Lone Star State showdown, only the second time in baseball history the home side has dropped the first six games in a best-of-seven postseason series. The other time it happened, Scherzer started Game 7 in Houston as well — pitching for the Washington Nationals as they defeated the Astros to win the 2019 World Series.“Seems a little odd nobody is winning at home,” Rangers designated hitter Mitch Garver said. “And I would like for it to stay that way.” Texas, one of six major league teams without a World Series titl...‘Be on alert’: Police searching for man in connection with Gardner homicide

Published Mon, 11 Nov 2024 07:30:22 GMT
Gov. Maura Healey does not have to amend or repeal the state’s “right to shelter” law.All she needs to do is enforce it.The law as written, and passed forty years ago, was never intended to house and feed the explosion of migrants from around the world storming into Massachusetts. It was passed and signed into law by liberal Democrat Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1983 to deal with the relatively small number of homeless families and pregnant women who were residents of Massachusetts, not residents of other states or countries. But the law has not been interpreted or enforced the way it was written. Instead, progressives have proudly waved it as a banner of compassion and an invitation to migrants from around the world to come to Massachusetts where they will be cared for.Liberal Massachusetts is the only state in the union with such a law.The word eventually went out that Massachusetts was a soft touch. So the mostly illegal immigrants came, and are coming, to the point that Healey had to c...Boston city councilor won’t lose election after Israel-Hamas remarks, observers say

Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson is expected to sail through in next month’s election, but political observers say her comments on the Israel-Hamas war could be a factor in two years if she faces a stronger opponent. Her description of the Hamas terrorist organization as a “militant group” and characterization of the Oct. 7 attack that killed more than 1,400 Israelis as a “military operation” last Wednesday was heavily criticized, but isn’t expected to turn off a majority of voters in District 7, two former city councilors said.“Do I think it’s going to impact her election? Probably not,” Michael McCormack, an attorney who served five terms on the City Council, told the Herald. “I think she wins with so few votes that the people who vote for her are probably just as uninformed as she is with respect to what she filed and her comments.”Also working in her favor is the “very weak” opponent she’s running against, McCormack said, referring to Althea Garrison, a perennial ca...MLB Offseason: Key dates to know as Red Sox enter pivotal winter

BERLIN (AP) — A prominent German leftist politician has launched plans to form a new party that some observers think could take votes away from the far-right Alternative for Germany.Sahra Wagenknecht on Monday presented her “Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance — for Reason and Fairness.” The aim is to formally launch the party in January, in time for European Parliament elections in June. Three state elections in Germany’s formerly communist east will follow next fall.Wagenknecht offers a combination of left-wing economic policy, with high wages and generous benefits, and a restrictive approach to migration. She also questions some environmentalists’ plans to combat climate change and opposes current sanctions against Russia, which was once Germany’s leading gas supplier, and German arms supplies to Ukraine.Wagenknecht is launching her project at a time when center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s quarrelsome three-party coalition is deeply unpopular.
