AUSTIN (Nexstar) — The Texas Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Tuesday, in a case brought by women challenging the state's near-total ban on abortion, marking the latest development in a long legal battle spurred by women who said the ban nearly cost their lives.Twenty-two women are suing the state in Zurawski v. Texas. Many of the plaintiffs said that they nearly died due to pregnancy complications that could have been prevented with a medically necessary abortion. They argue the abortion ban's medical exceptions are unclear, tying doctors' hands and threatening them with life in prison if they perform an abortion the state deems premature. The lead plaintiff, Amanda Zurawski, said she nearly died of sepsis last year after her doctor delayed terminating her pregnancy. She developed cervical insufficiency, and her daughter would not live. With the Gophers women’s hockey team enjoying another romp over Bemidji State on Saturday at Ridder Arena — this time beating the Beavers 9-1 — a lot of Gophers got their name on the scoresheet in the two-game sweep.Among the players of note were the Lindsay sisters, Ava and Sadie, who had their own reasons to celebrate the weekend beyond helping the Gophers (13-2, 9-2 WCHA) extend their winning streak to eight games.Ava, a highly touted freshman right winger, had a pair of goals in Friday’s win and added another on Saturday, giving her seven on the season. Sadie, a junior right winger, picked up the first goal of her Gophers career. As one of the prize recruits in the 2022 class, Ava was being counted on to score to help fill the scoring void the Gophers were facing due to graduation, and she finds herself third on the team in goals scored. She is playing on the Gophers’ second line, with another skilled freshman, Emma Kriesz, at center, and junior captain Peyton Hemp on left wing.“S...Timberwolves find way to hold off Charlotte

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)The Timberwolves’ defense wasn’t up to snuff. They were thoroughly outrun in transition and — with Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels out with injuries — the wing play left a lot to be desired. And yet the Wolves emerged with a 123-117 victory over the Hornets, largely thanks to their late-game execution. Because while Minnesota may be without its star wings, it does still have Mike Conley. The Timberwolves made nine shots in the fourth frame — Conley scored or assisted on six of them. He orchestrated a series of easy looks late in the game, many of which ended up in Karl-Anthony Towns’ buckets. But in the final 90 seconds, Minnesota had the ball up three points. FORT COLLINS — Blake Barnett finished his high school career as a one-legged Superman and, more importantly, as a state champion.Finally.“This was a true fairytale, and I don’t think I could have asked for a better ending,” the flamboyant and ultra-confident senior quarterback said after No. 2 Erie beat top-ranked Palmer Ridge, 20-6, Saturday to win the Class 4A title at Canvas Stadium. With his sprained left ankle heavily taped, Barnett, ever the showstopper and usually faster than a speeding bullet, hopped 35 yards downfield on his right leg to wrap running back Braylon Toliver in an end zone bearhug after Toliver rambled for a game-clinching 32-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.Moments after the clock struck zero, Barnett hopped to the sidelines, hoisted himself onto a bench and conducted the jubilant Erie crowd in a postgame symphony. Next, Barnett hopped to the stands where his father, Steve, hoisted him up the wall for another victory hug.“The w...Columbine dethrones Cherry Creek, denying Bruins’ five-peat bid, for Rebels’ sixth Class 5A crown

The Broncos will have three quarterbacks available for the first time this season when they play at Houston on Sunday.Denver on Saturday elevated practice squad quarterback Ben DiNucci to the game-day roster, marking the first time Sean Payton’s team has gone into a game this year with a QB potentially in the picture beyond Russell Wilson and backup Jarrett Stidham. There’s been no indication from the Broncos that either Wilson or Stidham is at any risk of missing the game. Neither has been on the injury report this week or at all during the season. The NFL changed a rule this offseason to allow teams to have an emergency third quarterback available as an extra player on the game day roster, but only if he is a member of the 53-man roster. DiNucci is not on the 53-man roster, however, so he must be elevated from the practice squad and take up a spot on the regular gameday roster to be eligible to play.Teams can elevate up to two players per week from the practice squad, and each playe...Suspects arrested for armed robberies of luxury goods across Southern California

KENTFIELD — A few moments after a desperation pass by McClymonds hit the turf and Marin Catholic celebrated its 35-28 victory in the NorCal 3-A title game Saturday, Michael Peters took a few minutes to stand by himself and reflect upon his 11 years as the Warriors’ head coach.Peters’ career, one that included four state titles and six NorCal championships, did not have a storybook ending. As he thought about his tenure at his alma mater, which began as an assistant coach in 1992, Peters said he was ready to enjoy retirement, but couldn’t help but feel like it could have been delayed by one more week.“It’s over … my career is done,” Peters said, adding after a sigh, “I know we should’ve played better than that.”McClymonds trailed 21-6 at halftime but got rushing touchdowns from Tajir Golden (61 yards) and Redmani Albert (5 yards) and a fumble recovery for a score by Jajaun Hudson. But on two occasions in the second half...Latest news
