Opinion: Angry about the Supreme Court? Blame Congress’ failure to act

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 23:16:56 GMT

The Supreme Court is seizing more and more policymaking power, prompting a barrage of criticism for the court’s imperial tendencies. The current ultra-conservative super-majority is voraciously advancing a deregulatory and anti-democratic policy agenda, including by rolling back environmental protections, degrading bodily autonomy, invalidating common sense gun control, undermining labor rights, nullifying student loan forgiveness, gutting public health measures, eroding the administrative state, insulating public corruption and dismantling laws and policies aimed at promoting a multi-racial, pluralistic democracy. No doubt, the critics are right: The court is overreaching.Yet prevailing criticisms miss half the problem. The court’s overreach is a direct result of Congress’ underreach. The Constitution relies on a system of checks and balances to preclude tyranny and ward off imperial overreach. As its framers recognized, power abhors a vacuum. The American model of government is no...

Stock market today: Wall Street points slightly higher ahead of US inflation update

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 23:16:56 GMT

Wall Street ticked modestly higher early Tuesday ahead of new U.S. inflation data that will play a role in a decision by the Federal Reserve on interest rates when it meets later this month.Futures for the Dow Jones industrials rose 0.1% and the S&P 500 edged 0.2% higher before the opening bell. For the first time in more than a year, the Fed did not raise its benchmark lending rate when it met in early June. Fed officials have suggested that as many as two more increases are possible this year.Forecasters expect inflation in June to fall to 3.1% from the previous month’s 4%. That would be higher than the Fed’s 2% target but down sharply from last year’s peak above 9%.“They will have a hard time justifying further rate increases if headline inflation — which is their mandate — is moving convincingly towards target,” said Rubeela Farooqi of High Frequency Economics in a report. It is still hoped that the U.S. can avoid a recession after a run-up in the Fed’s...

Excessive Heat in South Florida

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 23:16:56 GMT

All of South Florida is under a Heat Advisory. Please make sure to drink plenty of water when spending a prolonged period of time outdoors.Temperatures will peak in the low to mid 90’s during the afternoon today and tomorrow, and potentially through the remainder of this week. In fact, we will be flirting with records today. Why so hot? We have a mid level area of high pressure overhead trapping the heat along with Saharan Dust which prevents temperatures from cooling and suppresses thunderstorm development (we just tend to see less coverage). Also, light winds are contributing to the excessive heat we’ve been experiencing. Sharan dust departs midweek temporarily allowing additional showers and thunderstorms to form in the afternoon and early evening hours. However, the heat is forecast to continue along with another batch of dust arriving late week. Stay cool South Florida! Vivian GonzalezMeteorologist, AMS Certified WSVN Channel 7

US probes complaints that Ford Escape doors can open while SUVs are being driven

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating complaints that the doors on some Ford Escapes can open while the SUVs are being driven. The investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration covers 346,000 Escapes from the 2020 and 2021 model years. The agency says in documents posted Tuesday on its website that it has 118 complaints that spot welds in a door assembly bracket can fail. Investigators contacted some of the owners and found 25 reports of minor injuries. Many reported a popping noise when they opened the door as a bracket begins to separate. The agency says continued use could dislodge the door, and it could fail to latch when closed. Ford says it’s working with the agency to support the investigation.NHTSA says the probe will determine whether the problem creates an unreasonable risk to highway safety. The agency could seek a recall. The Associated Press
